Minutemen Documentary Due on DVD

Those of us who haven't quite figured out how to make their band our lives can continue to live vicariously through the Minutemen with the release of their acclaimed documentary, We Jam Econo, on DVD. The Tim Irwin-directed film is as well-executed a document of a great band you can find this side of The Last Waltz, and it will see the light of day as a two-disc DVD set on June 27.
The original movie had interviews with all three Minutemen as well as Ian Mackaye, Thurston Moore, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, J Mascis, and Flea, among many others. But the folks over at Plexifilm are making the wait for the DVD worth it by including even more interviews, live performances (62 songs from three shows), music videos, and archival footage for a total of over five (!!) hours of special features. There is also a 16-page booklet with photos, flyers, and liner notes by David Rees, creator of the comic strip Get Your War On. The DVD is available for pre-order (at a discounted price) HERE.
As usual, former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt is putting us all to shame with his relentless work ethic. In addition to the previously reported Stooges reunion album and tour for which he is playing bass, Watt will be joining up with Money Mark (Beastie Boys keyboardist) and John Wicks as Los Punkinhedz for what his website calls "some improv jams" at a free, all-ages show in his hometown of Pedro.
When he's not touring, Watt also has a radio show he recently sent into orbit in the podcasting universe. You can subscribe via iTunes to "The Watt from Pedro Show" HERE.
And as if all of this weren't enough, he has also appeared in print twice recently. First, he interviewed Charles Bukowski's widow Linda for the March-April issue of MEAN magazine, and then he himself was interviewed for the April issue of Guitar World's Bass Guitar. He has transcripts of the interviews up on his website HERE and HERE.
While you're there, read his account of the Stooges shows at the "Big Day Out" in Australia and New Zealand HERE. By the time you're done with that, you can come back here for news of the hundreds of other projects Watt is sure to have completed in the meantime.
