Sonic Youth Reveal New Album Details

Bust out the kinky guitar tunings and start whacking your Strat with a drumstick, 'cause Sonic Youth's new album is in the can and itchin' for release. According to the band's website, the previously reported Blondie/Christian-flavored title Do You Believe in Rapture? has been relegated to a song name, and the new album has been retagged Rather Ripped.
While it's a toss-up if the title is an ode to washboard abs or a comment on newsman Dan Rather's booting from CBS, the album is set to drop on June 13. (Alas, the 6/6/06 release date hinted at by Thurston Moore in his last Pitchfork interview is not to be.)
The CD version will be issued by Geffen Records, while Sonic Youth's Goofin' Records (oh you jokers!) will handle the vinyl. The bulk of Rather Ripped was recorded at Sear Sound Studio, home to the recording of previous SY discs Sister and Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star. Additional overdubs were recorded at the band's Murray Street studio and a few additional layers of skronk were added at J Mascis' in-house studio in Amherst, MA.

A couple weeks prior to Rather Ripped's release, Continuum Books will publish Matthew Stearns's 33 1/3 series book examining the 1988 SY classic Daydream Nation. And later this summer, the band will hit the road with Flaming Lips. So far, only a show in Paris in April, as well as festival appearances at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, have been schedule. But there's sure to be lots Moore to come. Get it? Of course you do.
